BADGES AND INSIGNIA

WINGED DAGGER

The world famous winged dagger badge is worn on the beige sas beret. This is a black shield, on which is a pale gold dagger (representing the sword Excalibur), with two upswept pale blue feathered wings, supported by red centres. The wings extend from the upper part of the blade, just below the hilt. Lower down the blade is a scrolled black ribbon bearing the metto `who dares wins` in the same pale blue as the wings.

PARACHUTE WINGS

The sas`s parachute (`sabre`) wings were originally designed by Lieutenant `Jock` Lewes in late 1941. He supposedly got the idea after seeing a fresco of an ibis, a large wading bird with a long curved bill, in an Egyptian hotel. They are worn on the right shoulder by members of the regiment.
